What is virtual hosting

What is virtual hosting?

Virtual hosting operates in a similar way to shared hosting in that it allows multiple customers to share the resources of one physical server, but with an extremely high degree of privacy and insulation.  This segregation is achieved by running a completely separate operating system for each customer within each virtual private server (VPS) environment.  Customers of VPS solutions have "root" level access and enjoy many of the benefits of a dedicated server, but with a fraction of the cost.  Each instance of the VPS has it's own IP address, users/groups definition, ports, firewall rules and so forth: leaving very little being shared with other VPS users besides the overall physical system resources.  Each VPS has it's own set of resource guarantees, always enough to run the operating system and can burst up to full utilisation at any given time.

What can I use my VPS for?

Absolutely anything you like, provided it is legal. VPS are suitable to be used as webservers, games servers, FTP servers, mail servers, database servers.

What happens if I reduce my specifications?

The Specification of your VPS is altered immediately, if you are reducing your disk allocation, a reboot will be necessary, you must also have sufficient free space to be able to complete the action successfully.

What is the benefit of having more virtual CPUs?

Increasing your number of virtual CPUs will allow you to parallelise processes so that they may complete more rapidly. Each virtual CPU is assigned to a physical core on the VPS host machine.

Is there any contract?

There are no contracts with our VPS, you can cancel at any time.

What is your SLA?

Our SLA is 99.99%

How long will my VPS take to set up?

Your VPS will come online immediately; it will be accessible as soon as your operating system finishes installing. We pre-provision VPS to minimise your wait.

What type of hardware do you use?

We use the latest generation of Dell PowerEdge r7xx series servers, optimised for virtualisation, to provide a stable platform. Each physical server has 8 x 10k SAS disks for primary storage, in a RAID-10 array, to provide full storage redundancy and high-speed access to data, and a top-end PERC RAID card with battery-backed cache to ensure the integrity of your data and no storage bottlenecks. We use flash memory for the boot volume, to ensure fast booting and to minimize downtime during upgrades. Each physical server has 12 Intel Xeon cores, designed for heavy server workloads, and 144GB of RAM to accommodate the present and future memory needs of each virtual server.

How many IPs do I get?

Each VPS comes with one free IP address. Additional IPs can be ordered for £1 a month.

What if I want to change my OS?

You can request a rebuild to an alternative OS from the VPS control panel, this will begin immediately.  Of course this is like reinstalling your PC at home, so anything that was on the server previously will be wiped during the rebuild process.

How do upgrades work and how are they charged?

Upgrades are applied immediately, but your VPS will need to be rebooted for them to take effect.  Upgrades are calculated on a pro-rata basis, with an immediate payment that will take you up until your next billing date. From there, you will be charged the new monthly amount.

Can I downgrade my VPS if my requirements change?

Yes, as with most other products from Host Junction everything except disk allocation can be downgraded, and only require a reboot. To downgrade disk allocation, your VPS will need to be rebuilt as the reduced disk space may not be sufficient to accomodate the original operating system.
